Causing the weak to fall
Week 6: Feb 5th – 11th
Bible passage to read: 1 Corinthians 8:9-13
While ye have light, believe in the light, that ye may be the children of light.(John 12:36)
In a planet that inhabits over 7 billion people, it is important to know that every single one of us is different from one another. There are unique and primary identifiers that separate every individual from any other person in the rest of the world. So there is no ‘two’ of you and even if you are a multiple birth issue, i.e. twins, triple, etc., you are different biologically and spiritually. What make us more different is that we do not handle situations in the same way, our thought process is different.
We have developed a lot habit along our life journey in many ways. For example, two boys are twins in the bible, born on the same day, but one is a farmer and the other, a hunter. Does that ring a bell?
Because the father has given us free will to become whatever we want, some of us have chosen to be hearers of the word and others have chosen to be the practicing tools of the word. Deuteronomy 28 says that And it shall come to pass, if thou shalt hearken diligently unto the voice of the Lord thy God, to observe and to do all his commandments which I command thee this day, that the Lord thy God will set thee on high above all nations of the earth. It is easy to claim this promise that God is making to us but notice the conditional statement in this verse, IF. So the father understands that you have free will and is leaving you to make a choice.
Who amongst us can be considered WEAK? There are various ways to look at this. Firstly, for the children and the deprived who are still developing their strength in the faith, Secondly, If you are in the body of Christ and you still engage yourself in bad company, drunkenness, evil communication, and violence which has come over you through the devil’s interference, you are not alone because the father knows. Also, if your faith is weak or the sort of Christian that depends on others to pray and seek God, then you are weak. However, by the grace of Jesus Christ we are all acceptable as the bible says in Romans14:1 whatever the denomination you belong to as long as you are not living in sin.
The moment you are accepted by God into his kingdom on earth, there are conducts that should not be exercised in the life of a child of God. For example, a man of God who works in the United Kingdom was invited by his work colleagues to join them at a nightclub to celebrate the festive season. He is not found being drunk of alcohol but was seen coming out of the nightclub by a young Christian boy who was at the scene, passing by from work. Or a shamed Pastor, who was caught sleeping with a sister in the church. It is clearly going to be a devastating blow for any young Christian that has put a lot of trust in church elders and leaders. Even with the advent of Facebook, young Christians today are saying: if my leader can do that, then I can do the same! If my mother can dress up wearing that in church then I can!
The reward for leading the weak astray is already set in the bible. Just because you are still being blessed does not mean you will not reap what you sow.
“If anyone causes one of these little ones—those who believe in me—to stumble, it would be better for them to have a large millstone hung around their neck and to be drowned in the depths of the sea. (Matthew 18:6 NIV)
