The Power of Fasting

Week 8: Feb 19th – 25th

Bible passage to read: Isaiah 58, Joel 2:12-32

Spiritual Fasting: Abstinence from food to focus on prayers.

My mother used to train us how to fast from a tender age. I am not sure why she did that anyway but I am very sure it has had positive impacts in my life.  Then, she would compel us to stay without food until 9 am or 12 noon and instruct us to pray along while we stay hungry. And as we grew older, she began to advise us to extend it till 3 pm or 6 pm. That was how we started and fasting gradually became a part of me. One of my siblings do not like this idea of staying without food, he absolutely detests it. But I love it then because of the sense of pride that I often derived from doing my mother’s will. However, I later realized that the training has deposited some things into me unknowingly. I gradually learned perseverance, patience and most importantly, how to wait upon the Lord. Looking back now, I cannot but thank God for empowering me to pass through that training earlier in life. It was really a memorable experience.

Just like my sibling, many of us often think that we are helping God or our spiritual leader whenever we are fasting. What a misconception from the pit of hell fire. Don’t be fooled; you are not helping anybody by staying without food, you are only helping yourself. Fasting brings concentration in the spirit world and sharpens our receptive spirit in order to connect with heaven’s high frequency. Those who fast regularly as the spirit directs gain fuel to power to life with ease. No wonder Jesus said to the disciples that they may not be able to wreak miracles and wonders except they fast and pray.

“And Jesus said unto them, Because of your unbelief:  for verily I say unto you, If ye have faith as a grain of mustard-seed, ye shall say unto this mountain, Remove hence to yonder place, and it shall remove, and nothing shall be impossible unto you.  Howbeit this kind goeth not out but by prayer and fasting.” Matthew 17:20-21

Faith is good; it is the engine of your relationship with God but fasting and prayers empower you to do great exploits. Fasting trains you not to be dependable in your flesh for power and strength; it teaches you to depend on divine supplies that can never end. You can never profess to be a powerful Christian when you are not prayerful. Learn how to use fasting and Prayers to activate miracles from heaven.

Fasting is not a time for asking God for bread and wine, it’s a time of spiritual seriousness for spiritually minded people.

“Then was Jesus led up of the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted of the devil.  And when he had fasted forty days and forty nights…” Matthew 4:1-2

And don’t be deceived into fasting the ways the unbelievers fast whereby they put up a sorrowful face and announce it everywhere that they are fasting. Present your prayers and fasting in the godly way that is most presentable to God. Do it naturally and heaven will surprise you supernaturally.
